About Nicole Daniah Sidonie

I am a Toronto based visual artist painting in oils and acrylics with a focus on the human figure. My methods favour an intuitively driven process, often beginning with abstraction before allowing the subject to emerge. Drawing on a background of painting in the realist tradition, I create expressive representational works that flirt with abstract ideas and passages, leaving room for the viewer to inhabit the painting and to form their own narrative.

BACKGROUND:

My interest in visual arts began with photography at Ontario College of Art and Design (formerly Ontario College of Art) and an internship with a Toronto based graphic design company. The years that followed took a major departure as I embarked on a decade long career in dance.

In 2004, I made the transition from performing arts back to visual arts and travelled extensively for a few years resulting in a photographic portfolio of captivating landscapes and the beautiful, diverse faces I encountered. My photographic work has received attention from TPOTY (Travel Photographer of the Year) and IPA (International Photography Awards). It has also been featured in the hardcover edition of Journey Two, the Toronto Star newspaper, U.K.'s Digital Photographer magazine and on exhibition at England's London Eye.

While working as a freelance photo editor in 2006, I decided to expand my creative reach and turned to Toronto's Academy of Realist Art and Scottsdale Art School in Arizona to explore the subject of painting and drawing in the realist tradition. Seven years later, unable to resist the pull of a blank canvas, I resolved to paint full time.
